Innovative new silicone hydrogel lens, featuring breakthrough optic technology, helps combat eye tiredness and dryness associated with digital device use.

Southampton, United Kingdom, 3rd October 2016 — Global contact lens manufacturer, CooperVision, has announced today that its pioneering new monthly contact lens designed for today’s digital world, Biofinity Energys, is now available to order in the UK & Ireland. Boasting a unique Digital Zone Optics lens design, alongside moisture-retaining properties for long-lasting comfort, Biofinity Energys offers patients a revolutionary option for all-day wear, helping to alleviate the symptoms of digital eye fatigue.

With more than 90 percent of adults using digital devices for more than two hours per day[i], resulting in seven in ten adults experiencing symptoms of digital eye fatiguei - tiredness, dryness and redness – Biofinity Energys helps reduce that tired-eye feeling whilst helping keep eyes clear, white and healthy.

The lens helps patients’ eyes to seamlessly shift focus between digital devices and offline activities with less effort and more comfort. After one week of wear, eight out of ten digital device users agreed that Biofinity Energyslenses made their eyes feel less tired[ii].

Two elements are at the heart of the lens’ performance and unique optimisation for digital device users:

  • Digital Zone Optics lens design, the breakthrough that integrates multiple front-surface aspheric curves across the entire optical zone. These curves distribute power evenly, simulating more positive power in the centre of the lens. This helps ease accommodative burden as wearers move their gaze from on-screen to off-screen and back with less effort.
  • Aquaform® Technology, which attracts and binds water throughout the silicone hydrogel lens material (comfilcon A) to retain moisture and help alleviate dryness even during times of reduced blinking, which is common with digital device use. Long silicone chains optimise oxygen transmissibility, and reduced silicone content results in a low modulus for softness and flexibility, enhancing comfort and fitting versatility.

The lenses also incorporate a smooth, naturally wettable surface design with a special rounded edge to help reduce conjunctival interaction and improve wearing comfort.

“As a nation we rely on smartphones, tablets, laptops, in-car displays and other digital devices every day. Extended exposure to bright light, screen glare and longer periods of use can contribute to the issue of digital eye fatigue and symptoms can often be dismissed as ‘normal’ by patients who have become used to a digital lifestyle,” commented UK & Ireland Professional Services Manager, Krupa Patel. “The launch of Biofinity Energys offers practitioners a fantastic opportunity to address these needs with a lens that can make a meaningful difference in people’s everyday lives.”

Biofinity Energys offers practitioners the same outstanding vision, fit and comfort properties that they have come to expect from CooperVision’s popular Biofinity family of lenses.

The lens is available in the same material (comfilcon A, 48 per cent water content) and parameter range as Biofinity® sphere lenses, with an 8.6 mm base curve, 0.08 mm center thickness at -3.00D, and 14.0 mm diameter in sphere powers from +8.00 to -12.00. The Dk/t of Biofinity Energysis also the same as Biofinity® sphere (160 at -3.00D).
